Managing our own finances can be very hard especially when there are temptations surrounding us. It takes great self-discipline to be thrifty. Financial literacy is not something that everybody possesses. Most people would result to impulse buying whenever there are sales or discounts without thinking that eventually the item they bought will become useless. We tend to realize the importance of money only when we have none. So, when you have the money in your hands, think twice whether that new handbag is worth it or not.
5 Steps on How to Create a Budget Planner
Step 1: Note your net income.
One of the most common mistakes we make is immediately spending our income on shopping and then we spend what’s left for necessities. This should not be the case, it should be the other way around. First and foremost, we should prioritize the things that should be paid first such as our taxes, rent, and etc. Then, we deduct it to our net income and what’s left can be consumed for shopping and/or saving. This way, we don’t have to worry about the financial shortage.
Step 2: Track your spending.
To have effective budgeting, you should be aware of your expenses. Write them down on a piece of paper to determine which ones you need to reduce. Writing them down is more effective than enlisting them on a digital note because you’ll be able to recall more that way. There are fixed expenses that you cannot reduce such as your rent, taxes, and etc. Your shopping and meal expenses can be reduced. For example, you can opt to shop once every two months and you can bring a home-cooked meal to work to prevent spending for a meal.
Step 3: Set your goals.
Set long-term and short-term financial goals to motivate you to save. Short-term goals include a holiday vacation, minor home improvements, and etc. Long-term goals include factors such as retirement, homeownership, and college. You can pin these to your vision board to constantly remind you of your goals. It’s easier to adjust your current spending if you have goals set in mind. Without a goal in mind, you’ll be irresponsibly spending your money on things that won’t matter years from now.
Step 4: Make a plan.
From the list of expenses you’ve made, decide on which ones you can survive without. You can’t reduce your fixed expenses so you have to reduce the unfixed ones. These expenses might be your gym membership (you can exercise at home), cable television (you can watch the standard provided channels on your tv), and etc. Your needs will always outweigh your wants, so adjust your habits and prioritize the ones that need prioritizing. You can spend on your wants once you have allocated a budget for it.
Step 5: Keep checking in.
Constantly check your progress to see if you are still on track. Do not throw away your budget plans after you have exhausted them. Instead, keep them for your future reference. Eventually, your salary and expenses will increase but you always have the choice to alter your budget. Take advantage of this raise to increase your savings. It’s not bad to reward yourself every once in a while but, take note of how it could possibly affect your budget.
