When you have working hours, you need to maintain a work log that stores information on the number of working hours you spent on your work schedule. Steps to Create Work Log in Excel
Step 1: Define labels
The first thing to do in your work log is to figure out what kind of information you want to record. You would typically need a field for the name of the employee, the time period (week, month), but also the name of the department and manager. You can, of course, add areas for social security numbers, worker IDs if necessary, but it’s better to simplify it.
Step 2: Use Columns to Separate Days
In this step, the morning and evening working hours areas are segregated to account for the longer mid-day lunch break. Also, you will not have to remember all of your day’s hours at the end of the day by entering hours in the timesheet twice a day.
Step 3: Calculate Daily Working Hours
Insert a straightforward formula = SUM (cell number) into the “Total hours” cell at the end of the first working day to add a single day’s hours. To calculate the next day’s total work, just copy the cell with the formulae and choose ‘paste formulae’ to the rest of the cells.
Step 4: Calculate Weekly Hours
You will need to add up all the daily total hours for that week to get the total hours you worked in a week. To do this, select a cell to display the complete weekly count and insert another SUM formula. This will add up all the required values and you get your data.
Step 5: Lock the Cells
Once you are done with your calculations, now you head to the ‘Format’ menu, and click on ‘Protect Sheet’. You will get a long list of options from where you need to select the desired unlocked cells and then choose a password to unlock the timeline sheet.
