5 Steps to Write a Physics Lab Report

Step 1: Start with an introduction.

As with research papers, a lab report’s introduction should have a short explanation regarding the purpose of the experiment. It should state the objectives which the conclusion will later on answer. Usually, this is also where you write the hypothesis in one sentence. An introduction can include background information and a summary of how the experiment was conducted.

Step 2: Describe your steps.

Describe the methodology and the steps you’ve taken during your investigation. This will serve as your procedure. This section should be detailed enough for anyone to read it and perform the same experiment. Write as though you’re helping someone else to do the lab. Diagrams can also be helpful in showing your setup.

Step 3: Present your data.

Numerical data taken from the steps you performed is usually presented as a table. Data would encompass what you documented during the lab experiment. You need to remember that this is a record of your fact-finding process and not yet an interpretation of what they mean. The interpretation of the data collected is done when you present your results.

Step 4: Discuss your analysis.

The data section shows figures. Your analysis should state the calculations you’ve made based on the numbers. This section should interpret the data and decide whether or not a hypothesis was warranted. This is also where you have to discuss issues you have encountered or errors you might have made while performing the experiment.

Step 5: State your conclusion.

It’s time to draw conclusions from the experiment performed. Were your objectives answered? Was the hypothesis rejected or accepted? Explain what this means and also include insights or ideas where the experiment can still be improved. You should also explain how your results can still be tested and countered based on the conclusions drawn.
