Introduction
This lesson will guide intermediate level saxophone players through the intricate world of jazz improvisation. It focuses on exploring scale options and phrasing techniques.
Objectives

To understand and apply jazz scales to generate melodic ideas (90 minutes).

To explore and practice jazz phrasing techniques in improvisational contexts (120 minutes).

To combine scale knowledge and phrasing techniques to improvise over a standard jazz chord progression (60 minutes).
Activities
Exploring Jazz Scales
Participants will learn and practise major, minor, dominant and altered scales, as well as the blues scale and jazz minor scale (90 minutes).
Practising Jazz Phrasing Techniques
Participants will experiment with different note lengths, timing, articulation, and dynamics to develop a unique and expressive musical voice (120 minutes).
Improvisation Over a Jazz Chord Progression
Participants will apply their understanding of jazz scales and their developing phrasing skills to improvise over a 12-bar blues progression in various keys (60 minutes).
Conclusion
By the end of this lesson, participants will have taken significant strides in their jazz improvisation skills. They will have gained a deep understanding of suitable scales for jazz improvisation and will have practised applying these scales in the context of a jazz chord progression. They will also have developed their phrasing skills and begun to establish their individual musical voices.
Assessment
Participants will be assessed on their ability to select and apply appropriate jazz scales, their phrasing, and their general comfort and creativity in an improvisational context.
