EMDR Session Specifics
The EMDR therapy session today with Mr. Michael Brown lasted for approximately one and half hours. The technique applied during the session was the standard EMDR protocol focusing on trauma recall reduction. The targeted distressing memories were related to childhood experiences, and we used bilateral stimulation to enable the client neural processing of these distressing memories.
Discussed Themes
Key themes that emerged in today's session revolved around Mr. Brown's childhood experiences, predominantly around feelings of neglect and loneliness. Hospital therapy played a significant role in the discussion as the client spent a considerable amount of time in the hospital during his early childhood which has led to recurrent, distressing memories and dreams.
Client Responses
Mr. Brown demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience throughout the dialogue and exposure phases of EMDR. Although he initially showed signs of discomfort while recalling distressing events, he progressively improved as the session advanced. By the end of the session, he reported feeling less burdened with decreased intensity of distress associated with said memories. He also appeared to manifest better acceptance of his past experiences.
Progress
Significant progress was noted in today's EMDR session. Mr. Brown was able to tolerate the discomfort of trauma recall much better than previous sessions, and he was increasingly able to manage his emotional reactions during exposure to distressing memories. There is evident reduction in his trauma symptoms, especially in relation to the traumatic hospital memories.
Plans
In the upcoming therapy sessions, we plan to continue with the EMDR therapy, employing advanced techniques, if necessary, to further alleviate traumatic distress. Given the significant childhood experiences centred around hospital therapy, strategies to desensitize the related distressing memories will be developed. Extensive focus will be placed on helping Mr. Brown develop coping skills and increase resilience in dealing with any residual distress from his past experiences.
