Cornell Note: World War II Causes

Main Causes of World War II

  • Treaty of Versailles

  • Hitler's Actions

  • Failure of the League of Nations

Treaty of Versailles

The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I but unfairly blamed Germany for starting the war. This led to economic problems in Germany that the Nazis exploited to seize power.

Hitler's Actions

Hitler's actions, like his invasion of Poland, broke the Treaty of Versailles and instigated World War II. He built the military beyond what was allowed in the Treaty of Versailles and reoccupied land that was taken away after World War I.

Failure of the League of Nations

The League of Nations failed to enforce the Treaty of Versailles which would have stifled Hitler's ability to wage war or gain power.
