  • Establish protocols for the disposal of damaged or expired PPE.

III. Scope

This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) applies to everyone including all employees, contractors, and visitors whose job responsibilities require them to utilize Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as a part of their duties. These guidelines are meant to be followed when these individuals are within the boundaries of facilities or work areas that belong to [Organization Name].

IV. Responsibilities

  1. Management

Ensure adequate provision of appropriate PPE, conduct regular assessments of PPE needs, provide training on PPE usage, and monitor compliance with this SOP.

  2. Supervisors:

Ensure employees are trained on proper PPE usage, conduct periodic checks for PPE compliance, and report any deficiencies or issues promptly.

  3. Employees

V Procedure

5.1. Selection of PPE

  • Conduct a hazard assessment to determine the types of PPE required for specific job tasks and workplace conditions.

  • Consult with safety professionals to identify appropriate PPE based on hazard levels (e.g., eye protection, respiratory protection, hand protection, etc.).

  • Ensure that selected PPE meets relevant safety standards and regulatory requirements.

5.2. Use of PPE

  • Ensure proper fitting and adjustment of PPE to individual users.

  • Provide training to employees on the correct use, limitations, and maintenance of PPE.

  • Encourage regular inspections of PPE before each use to check for defects or damage.

5.3. Maintenance and Storage of PPE

  • Clean and sanitize PPE according to manufacturer guidelines or recommended procedures.

  • Store PPE in designated areas that are clean, dry, and free from contaminants.

  • Conduct regular inspections of stored PPE to ensure readiness and integrity.

5.4. Disposal of PPE

  • Discard damaged or expired PPE following established disposal procedures.

  • Consider environmental impact and regulatory requirements when disposing of PPE materials.

  • Replace PPE as needed to maintain effectiveness and compliance.

VI. Training

All staff members relevant to the selection, use, maintenance, and disposal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must undergo initial training followed by regular updates or refresher courses. A meticulous record of these training sessions should be maintained to ensure accuracy, confirm that mandatory training has been administered, and avoid any contrasting details. It's also necessary that these records are kept updated to reflect any staff changes, training revisions, or other relevant factors.

VII. Documentation and Records:

  • Keep a comprehensive and detailed record of all hazard assessments that have been conducted, criteria used for the selection of personal protection equipment (PPE), educational training sessions provided to staff, periodic inspections carried out on the personal protection equipment, and activities involving the disposal of any materials or equipment.

  • It's necessary to periodically review and make updates to this Standard Operating Procedure as needed to accurately reflect any changes that may occur in our workplace conditions. This could include alterations to the environment, updates and changes to regulations, or innovations and developments in Personal Protective Equipment technologies.
