National Heroes Day (August 26) is one of the most significant holidays in the Philippines, commemorating the valor and sacrifices of the country's heroes who fought for freedom and independence. The observance of National Heroes Day can be traced back to the American colonial period. In 1931, Act No. 3827 was enacted by the Philippine Legislature, officially designating the last Sunday of August as National Heroes Day. This was later moved to the fourth Monday of August through Republic Act No. 9492, which was enacted in 2007 to create more long weekends for the benefit of workers and businesses.
National Heroes Day honors both well-known and lesser-known heroes from different periods of Philippine history. Among those celebrated are Dr. Jose Rizal, whose writings and martyrdom ignited the flame of the revolution against Spanish rule; Andres Bonifacio, the father of the Katipunan movement; and Emilio Aguinaldo, the leader of the Philippine Revolution who later became the country's first president.
