Ladies and Gentlemen,
Thank you all for being here today to celebrate International Dog Day, a day dedicated to our loyal, loving, and ever-joyful companions who bring so much happiness into our lives.
International Dog Day was founded in 2004 by animal advocate Colleen Paige, not just to celebrate dogs but to highlight the urgent need for their adoption. This day is a reminder of the countless dogs waiting for a forever home in shelters and rescue centers around the world. Dogs that are just as capable of loving, playing, and forming deep bonds with humans as those we might purchase from breeders or pet stores.
Adopting a dog is more than just bringing a pet into your home; it's about saving a life. Each year, millions of dogs find themselves in shelters due to no fault of their own. They might have been abandoned, lost, or surrendered by families who could no longer care for them. By choosing to adopt, you are giving a dog a second chance at happiness and providing them with the love and security they deserve.
Moreover, adopting helps combat the issues related to overbreeding and the unethical practices found in many puppy mills. These establishments often prioritize profit over the well-being of the animals, leading to poor living conditions and severe health problems for the dogs. By adopting, you are taking a stand against these inhumane practices and promoting a more compassionate approach to pet ownership.
It's also important to emphasize that every breed is valuable and worthy of love. Whether it's a purebred Labrador, a mixed-breed mutt, a small Chihuahua, or a large Great Dane, every dog has unique qualities that make them special. There are no superior or inferior breeds; each dog has its personality, quirks, and capacity to enrich our lives.
