Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed each October, began in 1985 as a collaborative effort between the American Cancer Society (ACS) and the pharmaceutical company Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca). During this initial campaign, the ACS introduced the pink ribbon as a symbol of breast cancer awareness, a color chosen to represent the cause due to its association with femininity and health.

Notably, in 1991, Evelyn Lauder, co-founder of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, helped to popularize the pink ribbon through her extensive advocacy and fundraising efforts.
