Veterans Day Speech
Veterans Day Speech
Good morning, everyone,
Today, we gather to honor the remarkable men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Veterans Day is a day to reflect on the courage, resilience, and dedication of those who have sacrificed so much to protect our freedoms and our way of life.
On November 11, we commemorate the end of World War I—the "war to end all wars." It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 that the armistice with Germany went into effect, marking the end of a brutal conflict that took the lives of millions. Originally known as Armistice Day, this day of remembrance was renamed Veterans Day in 1954 to honor not only those who fought in World War I but every American who has answered the call to serve.
Today, we are here to say thank you to all veterans. From the battles of World War II to the jungles of Vietnam, from the sands of the Middle East to peacekeeping missions around the globe—our veterans have faced unimaginable challenges. They have left their families, endured hardship, and put their lives on the line to protect the values we hold sacred.
As we stand here, it’s important to remember that a veteran’s service does not end when they return home. The transition from military to civilian life can be challenging, and many veterans carry the physical and emotional scars of their service. Yet, they continue to serve us, contributing to our communities as teachers, police officers, nurses, and leaders. They bring strength, resilience, and compassion that make our communities richer and safer.
Let us also take a moment to recognize the families of our veterans, who have made sacrifices of their own, showing courage and resilience as they support their loved ones in service and beyond. Our gratitude extends to you as well.
On this Veterans Day, let us not only honor the sacrifices made by those who served but also commit to supporting our veterans and their families. Whether through healthcare, mental health resources, housing, or educational opportunities, there are many ways we can give back to those who have given so much.
Please join me now in a moment of silence to honor all the veterans who are with us today, those who could not be here, and those who have given their lives in service to our country. [Pause for a moment of silence]
Thank you to all our veterans. Your bravery and dedication continue to inspire us. We owe you more than we could ever repay, and we are forever grateful for your service.
Thank you.
