1. Header
Start by placing your full name at the top of the resume in the largest font size (typically 16-20pt). Beneath your name, include your contact information: phone number (ensure your voicemail message is professional), email address (choose a professional one), LinkedIn profile link (if relevant), and a link to your portfolio or personal website (if applicable). You may also include your city and state, but this is optional depending on the job requirements.
2. Professional Summary or Objective
For individuals with significant work experience, write a concise professional summary (2-4 sentences) that highlights your most important skills, key achievements, and the value you bring to the company. Tailor it to the job you are applying for, emphasizing how your background aligns with the role. If you're an entry-level candidate or switching careers, consider writing an objective that outlines your career goals and how you aim to contribute to the company, focusing on your enthusiasm and transferable skills.
3. Key Skills
List 6-10 key skills that are relevant to the job you're applying for. These can include both hard and soft skills. Group your skills into categories (such as "Technical Skills" or "Leadership Skills") if it makes sense, or simply list them in bullet points. Ensure that the skills align with those mentioned in the job posting to make your resume more tailored and optimized for applicant tracking systems (ATS).
4. Professional Experience
For each relevant job, list your job title, company name, location (city, state), and the dates of employment (use the format Month/Year – Month/Year). Under each job entry, use bullet points to describe your key achievements and responsibilities, starting with action verbs (e.g., "Developed," "Managed," "Led"). Focus on quantifiable results and specific accomplishments (e.g., "Increased sales by 30% within 6 months"). Start with your most recent job and work backward in reverse chronological order. Keep job descriptions concise and impactful, emphasizing what you achieved rather than listing general duties.
5. Education
List your highest degree first. Include the degree title, the school name, and the location (city, state). If applicable, include your graduation date or expected graduation date (Month/Year). You may also include your GPA if it's above 3.5, along with any relevant coursework, honors, or awards if they apply to the position. If you have multiple degrees, list them in reverse chronological order, with the most recent degree first.
6. Certifications & Licenses
If you have relevant certifications or licenses, create a separate section where you list them in reverse chronological order. Include the certification or license name, the issuing organization, and the date received. If applicable, also mention the expiration date or any continuing education requirements.
