History of the Tradition of Christmas Tree

The tradition of decorating Christmas trees originated in 16th-century Germany. Early trees were adorned with simple decorations like paper roses, apples, and sweets. The custom became associated with Protestant Christianity, with Martin Luther often credited for adding lighted candles to trees, inspired by the stars shining through the trees during winter nights.

The first known Christmas tree appeared in Strasbourg in 1539, and by the 19th century, the tradition spread widely across Europe and the United States. Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III, is thought to have set up the first Christmas tree in England around 1800. The practice gained even more popularity after a famous illustration showed Queen Victoria and Prince Albert around a decorated tree, prompting many others to adopt the custom.

Originally, trees were lit with candles, symbolizing the stars. However, as electricity became more widely available, these were replaced by electric lights. Over time, ornaments such as baubles, tinsel, and candy canes became standard, and a star or angel at the top of the tree symbolized the Star of Bethlehem or the angel announcing Christ's birth.
