Subject: Science
Grade Level: 5th Grade
Activity Title: Exploring the Water Cycle
Duration: 45 minutes
Objective:
Students will understand and illustrate the water cycle by engaging in an interactive experiment and discussion.
Materials Needed:
Large clear plastic container
Small cup
Hot water
Ice cubes
Plastic wrap
Markers and paper
Activity Procedure:
Introduction (10 minutes)
Briefly explain the water cycle (evaporation, condensation, precipitation).
Ask students to share their prior knowledge or experiences related to rain, clouds, and steam.
Experiment (15 minutes)
Fill the large container with hot water.
Place the small cup inside the container without submerging it.
Cover the container with plastic wrap and place ice cubes on top.
Observe and discuss how condensation forms under the plastic wrap, simulating cloud formation.
Discussion & Illustration (10 minutes)
Have students draw and label the different stages of the water cycle based on their observations.
Discuss real-life applications (e.g., why it rains, importance of water conservation).
Wrap-Up & Assessment (10 minutes)
Review key concepts with a short Q&A.
Have students write a short reflection: What did you learn about the water cycle today?
Assessment Method:
Participation in discussion and experiment
Accuracy of water cycle illustrations
Reflection responses
Adaptations:
For younger students: Use a simple storytelling approach with visuals.
For older students: Add step to test different water temperatures.
