What is a Banner?
A banner is an upscaled advertisement or announcement printed material that businesses and organizations use to communicate a message to a large audience. Banners are meant to be large so its message is not only visible but also clear and legible even at a distance. Banners come in types which include the billboard type, roll-up banner, and the web ad type.
How to Make a Banner in Adobe Photoshop
If you're planning on making an impressive banner in Adobe Photoshop, you might want to go through our guidelines below. Whether you're making a banner for a school, company, or organization, our easy-to-follow guidelines can walk you through it from start to finish.
1. Decide on the Specifications of the Banner
Banner specifications refer to its physical characteristics such as the theme, orientation, and size. In terms of the theme, decide whether to go for a vintage or modern style. The orientation refers to whether the banner is going to be positioned horizontally (landscape) or vertically (portrait), the latter of which is a better choice for making modern roll-up banners. And for the size, the standard outdoor banner ranges from 6 feet by 2 feet to 3 feet by 10 feet.
2. Identify the Target Audience
Banners are almost as similar as other marketing materials wherein they're intended for widespread advertisements with the exception that they're upscaled for visibility purposes. Nevertheless, identifying your target audience is still a must to guide you in tailoring your content and design, and in determining the perfect location for your advertisement banners.
3. Prepare your Banner's List of Information
On a sheet of paper or any writing medium, prepare a simple list of information that you think might be relevant to your simple banner. If you want, you can focus on certain details only and just write keywords to save you time, just make sure that your list of information is already tailored to the needs and preferences of your target audience.
4. Make a Concept for the Banner's Layout
Before you start using Adobe Photoshop, make sure to plan the layout of your banner carefully and effectively. You can do this by making a sketch of the entire banner and organizing the elements logically. In addition to organizing the elements, leave a sufficient amount white space in between them to make your look breathable and neat. Alternatively, making a concept can be done by writing down details to describe your creative banner's layout.
5. Design in Adobe Photoshop
After you've made your concept layout, you can finally start designing your banner in Adobe Photoshop. Of course, the first thing that you will need to do is to launch the program and then start a new project. Afterward, you'll be given the option whether to use pre-designed sample banners or to start from scratch. Either way, go with what's comfortable as long as you refer to your concept when making the actual banner design.
6. Export your Finished Banner
When saving your work, you can choose to either keep it in PSD or to export it to a file format of your choice. If you are indeed exporting it, make sure to choose a file format that's compatible across different platforms. PDF, JPG, and EPS are some of these file formats and they're also perfect for printing your banners or using them for web and social media purposes such as with Facebook ad banners.
