Ebooks are designed to be read on various e-reader devices including tablets and smartphones. And whether you are self-publishing or a publishing company is taking care of your work, choosing the right ebook size is a crucial step in the publication process.

Ebook Sizes Standard

General

The size of your ebook would largely depend on the publication platform used. Although generally, the standard ebook has dimensions of 6,240 × 9,989.99 pixels. Translated in inches, the measurement is 20.8 inches × 33.3 inches. General ebooks are typically published in EPUB format, a widely supported format available on most ebook readers.

Kindle

Kindle is a popular e-reader device designed and owned by Amazon. To date, there are different variations of Kindle devices including Paperwhite and Kindle Keyboard. The standard size for an ebook on Kindle Direct publishing is normally 2,560 × 1,600 pixels with a 1.6:1 width to height ratio.

Wattpad

Wattpad is a popular platform where people can publish and read original stories online. A Wattpad ebooks are generally available in PDF format. The standard and recommended size for Wattpad ebook is 512 × 800 pixels.

Kobo

Kobo is another platform that sells ebooks, audiobooks, and e-reader devices. Kobo ebooks normally have a standard size of 14.9 inches × 20.1 inches. In pixels, the dimensions measure 4,470 × 6,030 px.

Kindle Direct

Amazon Kindle Direct is a self-publishing platform that enables people to publish their own ebooks. Kindle ebooks can be accessed and read on smartphones, tablets, and of course, Kindle devices. The usual and standard size for Kindle Direct Publishing is 2,560 × 1,600 pixels with a 1.6:1 ratio.

Novels and Non-Fiction

Similar to Kindle Direct, most fiction and nonfiction ebooks also have a standard pixel size of 2,560 × 1,600 px but with an aspect ratio of 1.5:1.

Illustrated Books

Another popular ebook type is illustrated books. Generally, illustrator books are slightly larger in size and measure 2,800 × 3,920 pixels to 3,000 × 3,600 pixels. The standard aspect ratio can either be 1.4:1 or 1.2:1.

Audio Books

Audio books are a type of ebook that is read out loud by a professional voice reader. Normally, audio book covers have dimensions of 3,200 × 3,200 pixels with an aspect ratio of 1:1. However, the overall size of the audio book would depend on the number of minutes and bits it has. But just to give you an idea, an average audio book file is about 28 MB per hour.

If you are publishing an ebook for commercial purposes, it is best to go with the standard market size to avoid unnecessary problems and inconvenience. Recommended ebook dimensions usually range anywhere from 1,500 to 1,800 pixels and an aspect ratio of 1:6:1 is generally the norm. Of course, you still need to consider the requirements of your chosen publishing platform as well.

Ebook Sizes for Adobe Photoshop

Photoshop is perhaps the most popular and widely known design software. If you are using Adobe Photoshop to design an ebook cover, you need to set the pixel size to anywhere from 1,500 to 1,680 pixels for the width and 2,400 to 2,520 pixels for the height. A minimum DPI (dots per inch) of 300 is also recommended. Again, the right size is subjective since it needs to be adjusted to the publication platform you are using (Kindle Direct, Wattpad, etc).

Ebook Sizes for Adobe Illustrator

Another alternative to Photoshop is Adobe Illustrator. If you prefer to use Illustrator to create an ebook, your dimensions should range between 625 × 1,000 pixels and 1,562 × 2,500 pixels. And like Adobe Photoshop, it is recommended to set the DPI to 300. Note that the size would also depend on the e-reader platform, so it is best to check the publication requirements before you begin creating.
