Ice cream parlors are stores where people can buy ice cream, gelato, sorbet, and/or frozen yogurt. Standard ice cream (also known as hard-packed ice cream) and/or soft serve, usually dispensed by a computer with a small number of flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, and "twist", or "zebra" (a mix of the two), are the most popular types of ice cream sold.
Ice cream parlors typically have a wide variety of flavors and products to choose from. Gelato is an Italian ice cream that contains less cream and more milk than American ice cream. A frozen dessert made with fruit, sugar, and ice is known as sorbet. There is no milk or cream in this recipe. Frozen yogurt, which has a smooth texture similar to soft-serve ice cream, is a common low-fat ice cream alternative. Ice cream and other frozen foods are often served in tubes, cups, or dishes, the latter two of which must be eaten with a spoon. Some ice cream parlors offer ice cream desserts like sundaes (ice cream with syrup, whipped cream, and other toppings) or milkshakes, or even a combination of the two (known as a Boston shake). Ice cream sandwiches, ice cream bars, and other pre-packaged frozen treats may also be available at some parlors. Some modern ice cream parlors also offer a range of hot fast foods in addition to frozen desserts.
