LinkedIn is a business and employment-focused online service that operates via websites and smartphone applications in the United States. The website, which was launched on May 5, 2003, is primarily used for professional networking and allows job seekers to post their resumes and employers to post job openings. As of 2015, the majority of the company's income came from selling recruiters and sales professionals access to knowledge about its participants. Since December 2016, it has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft.
LinkedIn allows users (both employees and employers) to build profiles and "connect" with one another in an online social network that can imitate real-life professional relationships. Members may invite others to become a "link," whether or not they are already a member. LinkedIn's basic functionality allows users to build profiles, which usually include a curriculum vitae that describes their work history, education and training, qualifications, and a personal picture for employees. Employers will post job openings and look for qualified applicants. Users can search for employment, individuals, and business opportunities that have been suggested by someone in their network. Users can save jobs that they would like to apply for. Users also have the ability to follow different companies. Members can also create "connections" with one another in an online social network, which can be used to reflect real-world professional relationships. Members will invite others to interact with them. Users can obtain introductions to the connections of connections (termed second-degree connections) and connections of second-degree connections (termed third-degree connections).
